Failure Analysis of Tapered Roller Bearings
1. Wear failure
Wear failure refers to the failure caused by the relative sliding friction between the surfaces that leads to the continuous wear of the metal on the working surface.
Continued wear will cause gradual damage to bearing parts and eventually lead to loss of bearing dimensional accuracy and other problems. Wear failure is one of the common failure modes of all kinds of bearings, which can be divided into abrasive wear and adhesive wear according to the form of wear.
Abrasive wear refers to the wear caused by the intrusion of foreign hard particles or hard foreign objects or wear debris from the metal surface between the working surfaces of the bearing and the relative movement of the contact surfaces, often causing furrow-like scratches on the working surface of the bearing.
Adhesive wear refers to the uneven force on the friction surface due to microscopic protrusions or foreign objects on the friction surface. When the lubrication conditions are seriously deteriorated, local friction heat is generated due to local friction, which is easy to cause local deformation of the friction surface and friction micro welding phenomenon, which is serious. At this time, the surface metal may be partially melted, and the force on the contact surface will tear the local friction welding point from the substrate and increase the plastic deformation. 2. The ferrule is broken
Ferrule fracture failure is relatively rare, usually caused by sudden overload. The causes are more complicated, such as raw material defects of bearings (bubble shrinkage), forging defects (overheating), heat treatment defects (overheating), machining defects (local burns or surface microcracks), host defects (poor installation, poor lubrication, instantaneous overload) etc. Overload shock load or severe vibration may cause the ferrule to break.
3. Cage fracture
Cage fracture is an occasional abnormal failure mode. There are five main reasons for this:
a. Cage abnormal load. If the installation is not in place, inclined, and the interference is too large, the clearance will be reduced, the friction and heat generation will be aggravated, the surface will soften, and abnormal peeling will occur prematurely. As the spalling expands, the spalled foreign matter enters the cage pocket, which causes the cage to block and generate additional load, which aggravates the wear of the cage. Such a deteriorated cyclic action may cause the cage to break.
b. Poor lubrication mainly means that the bearing is running in a state of lean oil, which is easy to form adhesive wear, which deteriorates the working surface condition, and the tearing objects generated by the adhesive wear are easy to enter the cage, causing abnormal load on the cage, which may cause the cage to break.
